In 1887, the British Empire celebrated Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. Victoria marked the fiftieth anniversary of her accession on 20 June with a banquet to which 50 kings and princes were invited. The following day, she participated in a procession and attended a thanksgiving service in Westminster Abbey.

Queen Victoria was the first female monarch to reach a Golden Jubilee. This alone is an event of immense proportions in British history.

Named Alexandrina Victoria after one of her godparents Emperor Alexander I of Russia and her mother Victoria, she inherited the throne at the age of 18.

She was given the title Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. On the 1st May 1876 she adopted the title Empress of India. She became a national icon who was identified with strict standards of morality.

The Victorian era was a period of industrial, cultural, political, scientific, and military change within the United Kingdom, and was marked by a great expansion of the British Empire. She was the last British monarch of the House of Hanover.
